Zootopia 2 is the sequel to the beloved Disney movie Zootopia that was released 9 years ago. For me, Zootopia is an outstanding film to watch annually and has a special place in my heart. With the second one being released this year I was getting really excited to see it, especially with reptiles being the main focus. Starting from Inside Out 2 being a billion-dollar hit, Disney has been eager to keep making more and more sequels to their globally loved films. Since the sequel Freakier Friday was a fun flick, I was getting hyped as we got closer to the release. Now having just watched it, it is fortunately just what I was hoping it to be…for the most part.
Once again, Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman and all the original voice actors from the first film have reprised their roles, but complimented with upgraded modern animation. It also has some really funny moments with lots of them revolving around Disney references, which were clever in their own way. The new places and characters are really cool and give Zootopia a bigger scale. The ending is great and I was jamming to the new original song for the movie, Zoo by Shakira who plays Gazelle in the film.
Although, the faults of the film are bringing it down a speck. The start is not my favourite, but it gets better as the case begins. The whole reptile aspect is very interesting, but we barely get any screen time for Gary De’Snake who is advertised and is an important character. Also, there aren’t as much reptiles as I expected with there being only lizards and snakes (from what I saw). I mean, the reptile plot is literally the thing holding it together, and you only add two types of them? I know there’s a couple of tortoises, but still maybe just a bit more of a variety.
Zootopia 2 is a great movie for all ages and brings a new side of Zootopia which hasn’t been seen before. I think the first is still better, but this one is a worthy follow up. This film made 556 million dollars opening weekend, meaning it is potentially going to earn 2 billion dollars overall! In China it earnt 271 million dollars opening weekend surpassing Avatar: Fire and Ash and becoming the biggest opening for a Hollywood movie post COVID-19! This is crazy and is just giving more reasons for Disney to make more sequels. Also, there is a post credit scene at the very, very end, meaning after the long credits, teasing what’s next and...it’s going to be epic!
