The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the sequel to the beloved Mario Movie with voices from Chris Pratt and Jack Black. If you’ve seen my review for The Super Mario Bros. Movie you would know that I loved it! I have always been a Mario fan and seeing that film was so memorable with all the easter eggs and great moments. So, when seeing everything for this one I was really, really excited, but also nervous. Because as I said in one of my news articles, people were worrying that there wasn’t enough “Galaxy” from the things we were seeing. That faded away as more trailers came out, but there was still slight hesitation. However, I was shocked when I heard some of the reviews for the movie. There were a lot of disappointed fans. I tried to stay positive though, this was one of my most anticipated films of the year! So finally, I watched it and I had a really good time, but not as much as the first one.

The animation in this one is stunning and is so colourful and vibrant. The action as well is great and is a real boost up from the first. It is also a bit more emotional this time around, not saying you’ll tear up, but it takes things a little more seriously. The voice actors also did a great job with some new characters like Yoshi, Bowser Jr. and Rosalina. Specifically there was one other cool addition, which I won’t spoil even though it was announced a week before the film came out. The reveals in this one are jaw-dropping, and I was gasping at some of them. However, my FAVOURITE part about this movie was the dynamic between Bowser and Bowser Jr. I was laughing so hard at their moments together, but they also shared some heartfelt moments which I personally thought was one of the most emotional parts of the film.

Now, ALL those things I just said were great, but this is what brought the movie’s rating down. The film is SUPER JAM PACKED! Meaning everything is happening all at once and it’s quite hard to tell what’s the motive and what’s going on in general. It feels like they’re just repeating certain things for the sake of “Galaxy”. With planet after planet, it feels forced. This one’s easter eggs are more apparent, like there’s less of a story and more of “just put this in cause it’s from this game” kind of thing. The pacing, although was really quick in the first movie, feels even quicker in this one despite it being a longer film. Everything from one-on-one moments to the big climax go by before you can even blink. Also, one minor thing…I loved the post credit scene for the first movie, but these TWO were kinda underwhelming. Not that they don’t reveal anything, but it just didn’t give me the hype that I had when Yoshi was teased. They’re just my thoughts.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a great watch for kids 5+ if you liked the first film, however if you don’t know any of the easter eggs, it might be a bit weird for you. To be honest, some were for me until my brother told me them. I’m still really excited for the next Mario movies like a Donkey Kong film and Mario Movie 3, but also the Nintendo movies in general like The Legend of Zelda coming next year. It’s gonna be huge for Nintendo, especially how many things they’re setting up!
