The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants is the fourth film in its film series and brings the villainous Flying Dutchman. I’m not really a big fan of Spongebob, but I’ve always enjoyed the original episodes growing up. When the movies started coming out, I watched them, however I didn’t think they were that good. Something about the characters and overall feel has changed from the show. Then came this film’s announcement…I wasn’t too familiar with The Flying Dutchman, although there is a wide fanbase who were excited to see him included. A couple of days after watching Anaconda (read my review to see my thoughts on it) I ended up watching this film with a mate. I was expecting just a movie no different to the other ones and it is probably the best in the film series, but it is another average movie.

The animation is cool and some of the jokes are pretty funny. The voice actors do a good job especially Mark Hamill as The Flying Dutchman. Speaking of The Flying Dutchman, he and his crew were what made the movie more enjoyable than the other Spongebob movies. However, the best thing in the film is it’s song by Ice Spice and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles short film played prior to it. Every time it started playing I would burst out singing and the action in the short was phenomenal!

The plot is very basic and I wish it was more creative. Although the runtime is quite short, the movie is quite boring at times. Most of the jokes are just silly and a bit weird with some exceptions. Also, the CGI showed in a couple of scenes are really crap and could have been done way better. All these negatives made the movie what I reviewed it.

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants is an average film for older kids, but children around 4-10yo may enjoy it more than some. Sponegbob in my opinion isn’t how it was back then and I just wish they could release something faithful to the original TV show.
