The Mandalorian and Grogu is the first theatrical Star Wars film in over 6 and a half years which follows the famous Mandalorian and Baby Yoda (Grogu). Just before I go on with the review, sorry if it came a bit late, I’ve got a couple of movies that are coming to KMR very soon, so stay tuned. Anyway, I’ve always been a mixed fan of Star Wars. I thoroughly enjoy the movies, but all the Disney+ shows that have been released have really let me down. A bunch of them I didn't even bother to check out! However, if we go back to the start of that “TV show reign”, I remember when I first started watching The Mandalorian. It was the first of its kind and I LOVED it. The characters were awesome and it was exciting to watch the episodes weekly. I really liked Season 2 as well, but Season 3 was...disappointing. I felt like it was really missing the vibe and quality of the first two seasons. So going into this film I thought it would be a Season 4 turned into a film. I was kinda looking forward to it but kinda not. There were lots of mixed reviews online, and it looked like the type of movie that non-fans like and fans dislike. So going into it a half and half, I can admit it is better than Season 3, but I just couldn’t really enjoy it as much as I would’ve wanted.
Jon Favreau did a great job directing and co-writing the movie. The characters and places were memorable and gave the movie a cool atmosphere. The soundtrack was great with the music really gelling with the scenes. However, what I loved about this film the most was actually one I also hate (weirdly)....the whole motive with the Hutts and Grogu. If you don’t know, Jaba the Hutt was a famous creature in the original Star Wars movies and now there’s multiple family members. It was really cool to see them being very involved in the film. Grogu was so adorable and funny, which made the movie very entertaining.
The thing about The Mandalorian and Grogu is that it has great ideas but can’t portray the franchise faithfully. There are scenes, for example with the Hutts (mainly a specific one) and with Grogu (Ha! What a coincidence!) that are cool but drag on and are kinda underwhelming. It gets to the point where it's awkward seeing them do things when the scene isn’t doing anything for the movie. Especially the one with Grogu, it was the most overextended scene I’ve seen in a long time! It was literally Grogu walking through a forest for 20 minutes straight!
Overall, I think The Mandalorian and Grogu is a movie you could enjoy if you’re 6+ with slight violence, however on a fan and film critic’s side of things, it might or might not appeal to them. I don’t think they’ll be doing a Season 4, but Star Wars: Starfighter coming out 2027 could change my mind on the franchise right now with Ryan Gosling starring in it. And honestly, I really hope it does!
