Supergirl is the second major film in the new DCU, directed by Craig Gillespie, who made the hit film, Cruella. I have always been a fan of Marvel with their comics and movies, a key reason was because I grew up with them! Endgame was such an experience watching it in the cinema, but in that time was the Zach Synder era of DC where no-one was really into the films. However, when James Gunn was hired as head of the studio, they decided to fully reboot. So then after watching Superman, their first film, I was extremely happy with the result and was really excited to see a Supergirl movie. But trailers released, and early reviews were coming out saying it was average, a let down from the beloved Superman. I tried staying positive, waiting nervously for release, hoping it would have the spark that Superman had. Now, having seen it, it is very underwhelming and I came out very mixed.
Milly Alcock does really well as Kara/Supergirl, bringing to life the characteristics which really shine in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (which this film is based off). Superman is also in this movie and he is enjoyable in those scenes, along with all of Kyrpto’s moments with some offering an emotional punch. The fight scenes are pretty cool, with it being very different to Superman’s, however the BEST part of this movie was Lobo played by Jason Mamoa. He brings such great, charismatic energy and whenever he’s on screen I either laugh or just sit there in awe. I really hope Lobo gets his own solo movie, as reports have been saying that one of the reasons they put Lobo in the film was for that specific purpose!
Now, where do I begin! Ruthye played by Eve Ridley just felt like an off character. Not that her performance was bad, just the writing felt messy and crowded. Same for Supergirl, Milly Alocock did great but the dialogue and how they go about telling her backstory, heck even the order of clips is weird and complicated. The villain was also very underwhelming, and it felt like every time Supergirl came on, there had to be some sort of weakness bullet or weapon that could stop her so that the villain was more powerful, even though Supergirl could stop them easily. I mean James Gunn said it himself that he and Craig Gillespie basically competed against each other on making a better cut of the film than the other and ultimately, Gunn’s cut was chosen! They also went and tested 45 DIFFERENT SONGS for the final act of the movie! And I have to say...that song they ended up picking was pretty bad! This is what I mean, the creative differences really broke this film and I think its going to affect them as this movie is bombing hard.
Supergirl is an average superhero film for people who just want to watch something on a random weekend, but fans of the genre will probably come out disliking it. It's got some mature parts which I was surprised about, so kids 10+ would be the age this film’s most suitable for. I’m disappointed Supergirl came out like this, with the writer also set to be doing a Wonder Woman and Teen Titans movie. But at the end of the day, it's all leading up to Man of Tomorrow which I can’t wait for! It’s gonna be great to see all these heroes together in 2027.
