Michael is the long awaited biopic of Michael Jackson, played by Jaafar Jackson, his nephew. When hearing about this film, don’t get me wrong I was interested in the project, but I wasn’t super excited. However, trailers got released and…the entire look and feel of the movie totally changed my perspective. I got really hyped from then on, watching all the concerts and music videos of him (my personal favourite being the Thriller video). Now, after watching the film, I can say that I had an AMAZING time!
I don’t think I can start this review without praising Jaafar for his incredible performance. He did a great job bringing Michael to life along with Colman Domingo as Joseph and many more. Speaking of Joseph, how Colman portrayed him was so good and I really felt his cruel presence. The movie was entertaining the whole way through and there wasn’t a single moment where I was bored. The best thing about Michael though is the music (naturally). Whenever there was a song or musical moment, I was jamming to it and having a good time! This really boosted up my love for the film, along with its cinematography and style. The look of when he’s on stage or in New York or wherever was just fantastic!
The main thing I’d say which was holding the movie back was the story. Obviously, a person’s life isn’t scripted, which is exactly what makes these biopics hard. Because there’s always parts of their life which when adapted have to be changed or missed entirely or even “safely touch upon”. There is quite a few moments like that in this film. I don’t want to spoil anything but there are pretty important parts in Michael’s life which get briefly discussed and then never talked about again. There were also key parts that never get discussed at all. They have promised a sequel, but due to what I would say is a movie only older kids could watch, some of the things that happen in his later life are not suitable.
Michael is a feel-good, guaranteed billion-dollar blockbuster for fans and movie-goers 10yrs+, due to some dark moments. I really enjoyed the movie, however people who may know a lot more about Michael Jackson may find the interpretation was off and not truthful. It really depends on the audience. I’m excited to see what they’ll be doing for the sequel. I’m hoping it kicks off with the first song of his I was introduced to…Smooth Criminal!

I think that the plot was a little rushed, but I loved the singing HEE HEE !

This is an AMAZING MOVIE! Jafaar Jackson plays Michael so well that it feels like he is the Michael Jackson himself. The dancing and music helped make a really good vibe. No matter what the critics say this is a great movie and I will definitely be watching this again. 🎤🪗
