Goat is the latest Sony animated movie produced by NBA all star Steph Curry. When first seeing the trailers for the film it looked really good! Especially since I love playing basketball, it looked like a cool project for Sony’s next animated project. However, (I don’t know why) but I started to lose interest in it. From actually being excited, to not really remembering that it is releasing, and the film Hoppers was doing the exact opposite (more on that in my review). So now I’ve finally gotten to watch Goat and it’s pretty good, but has great ideas which are rushed.

The animation in the film is awesome! Of course, we’ve seen this kind of style through the company’s movies, but it is still absolutely amazing. The balance of emotion and humour was well done for a kid’s film. The music is very reminiscent to American street basketball, if you watch it, you’ll get it. But no doubt, the best part of this movie was the elements and character arc that the panther basketballer Jett Fillmore had. It brings themes of what it feels like to be famous, fans hating on social media, having to film ads, having your own shoes, forced retirement...those were things I Ioved that were put in the film and brought a layer of uniqueness to it.

There were moments where I thought other than the Jett Fillmore parts, it got quite repetitive. Specifically, how the games are formatted, it feels like Space Jam or any other sports movie. The biggest negative was that cool concepts were rushed. Like the whole beginning was really slow, that was fine, but when the ending was rushed, I was kinda disappointed. Everything would end nicely and come to a close, but some of the good morals and character arcs were changed. It just got…weird.

Goat is a sports animated film for kids 8-9+ depending on if they like sport or not. If not, it will be hard to like as all of it is reliant on background knowledge of not even basketball, but just sport. I’d be happy if Sony keeps doing more original ideas like this, but definitely prefer the Spider-Verse franchise.
