Avatar: Fire and Ash is the third installment in the Avatar series directed by the famous James Cameron, most known for making the film Titanic. I’ve been really, really excited for this move ever since The Way of Water came out. The first film wasn’t my favourite, but the sequel made me fall in love with the franchise. So, when trailers and posters released for this one, I was a happy kid. This evil fire tribe was piquing my interest! And don’t get me started on the Avengers: Doomsday trailer shown in the previews, more on than in my latest news article. I then finally watched the film and it’s good, but not the best.
The VFX is stunning! I don’t think there was a single off looking shot that I saw. The soundtrack is also great and makes the scenes even better. This movie has the highest stakes with characters getting more emotional. Varang (the leader of the Ash People) is menacing and gives our main characters a dangerous fight. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and more do fantastic in their roles and I can’t wait to see them in more movies.
Unfortunately, the Ash People are kind of wasted and don’t get much screen time. They are very interesting characters, yet they only explore their home for about 5 minutes because it’s such a long movie. Same goes for the Wind Tribe! The film is 3hrs and 17mins which makes everything drag on for so long when they could’ve just made scenes shorter. However, the main negative I had was how repetitive it is from The Way of Water. This movie was supposed to be part of The Way of Water, but was too long so they had to split it into two parts and you can really tell. Everything starts where The Way of Water left off and it doesn’t do that much new. And even the new things get short amounts of screen time because they have to focus on all the water stuff still!
Avatar: Fire and Ash is an enjoyable movie for people who like the Avatar franchise. Be prepared for the long runtime because even I got bored with all the same water stuff. I’m still excited for Avatar 4 and 5, but this one’s performance has taken the hype down a little.
