New Trailer for Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Making Fans Mad

Spider-Man holds head with hands, wearing a red and black suit. Smiling woman with red hair. "SPIDERMAN" text on red background.

On Monday the second trailer to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was released, but’s it’s not what people expected. It all started on Saturday, when we were told that a Nintendo Direct would be happening with new footage to showcase. I was very excited and was speculating on what the footage could show. New characters like Wario, Waluigi, Daisy, more Rosalina or Bowser Jr. However, a character that was confirmed but not shown in the first trailer was Yoshi! The post credit scene for the first film revealed that he would be coming and there were some leaks revealing his appearance in this movie. People were thinking he would definitely be in this trailer! And so it released and yes, he is the main focus of the trailer with also a lot of new details revealed!

So yes, this trailer is called Yoshi First Look and Yoshi is featured in a glorious new poster. In the trailer, it basically opens with Mario and Luigi in Tostarena who are tasked to check out a pipe in a dark cave in one of the fallen floating pyramids. But before they enter, they get fire flowers out of their pockets and transform. They continue to enter the cave with Luigi being the scaredy cat he is. Anyway, they hear roaring sounds from what seems like a dinosaur and check through the pipe. They then see two glowing eyes and get startled. They prepare to attack, but the creature seems to get scared. Without knowing what it is, Mario and Luigi comfort it. The dinosaur then comes out of the shadows and reveals to be none other than Yoshi. There’s then some scenes of Mario and Princess Peach dodging notable Mario obstacles, Luigi saving a blue toad in a frog suit, Peach fighting lots of enemies and even a scene where Toad is jealous of Yoshi when he’s getting all the attention, which I love. But the end of the trailer is where fans get confused! It shows Yoshi holding the gun from Yoshi’s Safari, with Toad carrying a baby Mario and Luigi. Yoshi tries to scare away what looks like the dinosaur from Super Mario: Odyssey, but it retaliates and Yoshi and Toad run away with the babies. That especially confused people.

Now, the big thing that fans are really angry about is that for a movie called Super Mario Galaxy, there isn’t much galaxy in it. Fans think this trailer really comes across more of a Yoshi’s Island Movie, or The Super Mario Odyssey Movie, or The Super Mario World Movie, or The Super Mario Movie 2. These are all games that were referenced multiple times in this trailer. My honest take on this is that, yes, it is a bit worrying but this is only one trailer. The first trailer for the film had SO MANY galaxy elements in just 2mins and this has SO MANY Yoshi’s Island elements in a Yoshi trailer. Not a trailer 2, a Yoshi trailer. This was intended to reveal Yoshi, not to be the next full trailer. I think people are exaggerating and just need to remember we are finally getting a Super Mario Movie 2 along with so many more movies like Toy Story 5, Supergirl, Avengers: Doomsday, Jumanji 4, GOAT, Hoppers, Moana, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (my most anticipated), and many many more! It’s gonna be a great year for films especially with the Super Bowl on February 9th, it’s gonna show so many trailers and new looks, so be on the look out for a breakdown of that. How do you feel about the newest trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie? I think Yoshi’s character is needed in the franchise and I can’t wait to see him on release day, April 1st.
